A Mormon (Feminist!) Image:On the edge
Desperate for employment after my mission, I took a job for a helicopter company in the Grand Canyon. I lived seven days at a time on an isolated outpost with five men. I used this isolated spot as a place to meditate, write, or read my scriptures.

I love it.
I could never do that, since I’m terrified of heights, but I love it.

I’m the same as Jack. I can’t look at the picture for very long because my arms and legs start to shake. But, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

Perhaps the reason I stopped attending church when I was able to just barely live without support from my parents was because I wasn’t totally and totally (did I mention totally) stunning. I was so out of place. Stunning. Picture.

beautiful

This place was actually more of a gradual drop off. Not nearly as scary as it looks. Trust me, I had to run back to the spot in ten seconds to beat the camera timer!

What a beautiful picture, Lacy.

ahhhh I am so envious. every time I hear of a job like this… wilderness for a week, then real life for a week… I think how amazing an experience that would be. Maybe my hubby and I will be fit enough after all our kids leave home and we retire that we can do this then.

I just thought of (yes another) totally twisted use of the hymn:
Put your shoulder to the wheel (push her along) . . .

(for the prior twisted version of that hymn, see here)

I’m curious about the logistics of running a helicopter company in the Grand Canyon. Did you shuttle back and forth from a rendezvous point? Did you accompany tourists on the helicopter rides? Were you the pilot? Why were you having to spend long periods of time in a remote area? Were they camping tours? It’s a gorgeous picture, but can you fill us in on a little more of the back story?

Just for you Kevin, I’ll put up another one in a few hours.

Tatiana,
I worked at Grand Canyon West. Small airplanes would fly tourists out from Vegas to us. The helicopter company I worked for then took them to the bottom of the Canyon where they would take a boat ride on the Colorado river.
I was in customer service–checking everyone in and assigning seats on the helicopter.
All the employees slept in the terminal. The closest town (Peach Springs) was about over an hour’s drive on a rough road. Hence, the seven on, seven off schedule.

Awesome place. Were you flying guests down to whitmore wash? I saw a few canyon west boats swapping passengers out there last time I floated the canyon.
